Now offering private kindergarten! Helping you lay the strong foundation upon which the rest of your child's life will be built! (Matthew 7:24-25)
Why choose private kindergarten?
Most importantly, your child will be immersed in God's word on a daily basis. Hearing and learning God's word, especially what it has to say about them, will increase children's confidence and help them stand against low self-esteem, giving them the opportunity to be an example to others. This is what many parents fear the most: their children will become "lost" in public education, and what they've instilled in them during childhood will be forgotten. But we HAVE to believe God's word: "If we train up a child in the way he should go, when he is old, he will not depart from it" (Proverbs 22:6). At Pettit Private School, we will partner with you to help train your child using God's word, including teaching children about God's commandments and the promises for His children, the armor of God & the fruits of the spirit - all teachings from the Christian Bible that will help them experience success now and for the rest of their lives (Psalm 119:11)! What a great, strong foundation to have!
Secondly, having a low child to teacher ratio will enable your child to receive more one-on-one instruction. Kindergarten classes in public schools average a ratio of 20:1. And children entering kindergarten bring with them a wide variety of past experiences. Some children attended preschool and can recognize all the letters of the alphabet, while some don't know the difference between a letter and a number. Some children have a passion for literacy because they have been read to, while others have never seen a book (this is a sad reality!) Even though they are all in kindergarten, the development of these children can range from 3 years to 7 years. That's tough on a teacher despite her best efforts!
It is our goal to keep class size small so your child's unique needs can be discovered and met. Too often, because class sizes are so large, it is impossible for a single teacher to get to know each of his/her students. (What does this child already know? Has he mastered phonemic awareness, a building block for reading success or the alphabetic principle, the foundation for writing? How does he learn best? Is he an auditory, visual, kinesthetic learner? Does she work best individually, with a partner or in small groups?) The teacher will have the capability to learn your child and tailor instruction to his/her specific needs. Sometimes, this is the difference between a child's success and failure in a classroom. And the class size being more manageable, the teacher will be able to vary the learning experiences for her students, even taking children on frequent curriculum-related field trips to enhance and extend their learning!
Having a private kindergarten enables us to have more choice in curriculum and what's taught to your child. However, one of Pettit Private School's goals is that your child be able to successfully transition into public school; therefore, our curriculum will include many of the Kindergarten TEKS (Texas essential knowledge and skills), which is a set of knowledge and skills encouraged for a 5-year old. (Remember, we'll meet your child where he/she is in order to build a strong foundation!) Check out the TEKS at http://ritter.tea.state.tx.us/teks/grade/Kindergarten.pdf.
But because we understand that children learn best when information is organized and connected, we'll incorporate many of the TEKS using a research-based, themed approach. All learning experiences will be based on children's interests and needs...that's how we get children excited about learning! And the learning experiences will support the monthly theme, which allows children to create organized "files" within their brains from which they can later, more easily, retrieve. That's when you know you've learned...when you can pull from stored knowledge and use it! Because we have more choice in the curriculum, we've decided to include weekly, professionally taught extracurricular classes at no extra cost to you. These include Wiggles N’ Tunes (music), PC Kidz (technology) & Stretch-N-Grow (physical education) - lots of extra fun added to your child's week! Each of these classes will only enhance your child's private education experience!
The private kindergarten program will be overseen by Traci Pettit, owner of Pettit Private School, Inc. Traci has been a public school teacher in the Irving ISD and Northwest ISD and has taught in the College of Education for both the University of Texas at Arlington and the University of North Texas, where she continues to teach pre-service elementary teachers. She earned a B.S. (Bachelor of Science) from Dallas Baptist University, an M.Ed.T (Master of Education in Teaching) and an Administrator's Credential from the University of Texas at Arlington.
Private kindergarten is not a whimsical idea for Traci. Rather, it's a call she feels strongly about because of her experience in the field of education. She has seen the effects of a weak foundation in the early years of schooling; she has seen children left behind. This is an effect she wants to help prevent by being proactive and offering private kindergarten as an alternative to public kindergarten. Allowing parents this choice affords them an opportunity to give their child one more year of SOLID education, an education that will help continue to develop the whole child. Doing so will help lay the strong foundation upon which the rest of his/her life will be built! Let's build this foundation together!
It's an honor for Traci to expand her mission by offering private kindergarten! And she looks forward to growing this mission based on the community's needs for their children!
